I'm a big fan of Perl. It's a great way to develop code. If you want to release Perl code, though, you generally have to release the source. Lots of people want to release/distribute Perl scripts with the source code hidden, so how to do this without revealing the source is a FAQ. Replying to ryandesign@ 'i386 ppc' is the usual value of universalarchs on Leopard. You can change it to 'i386 x8664' if you want but note that this is not well-tested on Leopard so you might run into problems most of us have not seen before.

Perl officially stands for Practical Extraction and Report Language, except when it doesn't. Perl was originally a language optimized for scanning arbitrary text files, extracting information from those text files, and printing reports based on that information. It quickly became a good language for many system management tasks. Make sure you do not have any version of Perl already installed. ( Download and install Padre, the Perl IDE/editor (Strawberry Perl version 5.12.3 comes as part of the install, you also get many other useful CPAN modules as well). Log out and back in (or reboot) Go to your start menu, then click the “Perl command” link. Perlcc creates standalone executables from Perl programs, using the code generators provided by the B module. At present, you may either create executable Perl bytecode, using the -B option, or generate and compile C files using the standard and 'optimised' C backends. The code generated in this way is not guaranteed to work.

The Perl developers have released Perl 5.12.3, the latest update to Perl 5. This latest version is the result of four months of work and '2,500 lines of changes'. In the 'perldelta' notes for the release, the developers note that the built-in functions
keys
,values
and each
now work on arrays rather than just hashes, but admit this was a change introduced in Perl 5.12.0 and not documented. Perlcc For Perl 5.12.3 For Mac Os
There were also some general bug fixes for the B::Deparse compiler backend, Module::Build under cygwin; also for copy on write lvalue return values and platform specific fixes for Solaris and regressions on VMS. Perl 5.12.3's source is available from CPAN and is licensed under the Perl Licence (either the traditional Artistic licence or the GPL).
